Volunteers Needed Now
We have several critical 2012-2013 volunteer positions that must be filled by May 18, as we will need to revise the budget and next year’s programming accordingly prior to the General Session that will be held on May 22, 2012 at 7 p.m.
The Normandale Elementary PTO policy is that programs lacking volunteer leadership will be eliminated until the following year. This has been a successful way for us to operate in that we have parents with unique and broad-based interests allowing us to do some wonderful things at the school.
Please consider what you can do to help. Open positions are listed below. Refer to the Volunteer Booklet for a description of the positions. Call Julie Wohlford at 952-928-0813 or email jjwohlford@msn.com to claim your spot or discuss the volunteer positions available.

Why Now?
Read on to find out why filling these positions now is so important. Due to the non-profit status under which Normandale Elementary operates its PTO, we must:
- Put together a volunteer slate for the following year and have it approved by the PTO membership at the PTO General Session on May 22.
- Develop and submit a balanced budget for the following school year. We do this is by determining expenses for the year and then identifying how to balance the budget with dues and fundraising programs.
Here is a brief overview of how Normandale Elementary generates and allocates its funds. Our detailed budget will be presented at the General Session.
PTO Dues pay for:
- The administrative costs of running the PTO, maintenance of capital improvements funded by the PTO (i.e. Promethian Boards), school directory, membership dues (i.e. Edina Ed Fund, MAIN, PCN, etc.), subscriptions (i.e. quickbooks, urls, research, etc.)
Parent Donations (collected on the PTO dues form) pay for:
- A portion of the funds needed to bring talented, native French speakers to Edina (we implement fundraisers to pay the remainder of this).
Fundraisers pay for:
- a significant portion of the Intern program
- Books for the media center
- Substitute teachers for staff to conduct reading evaluation so we can identify the personalized level of instruction they need
- Incremental funding for playground supervisors
- Classroom supplies
- Family Fun and Service Night
- Imagination Fair
- Jr. Great Books
- Art Adventure
- Kids council
- French typing program
- And this past year, we added the climber to the playground
